standing idly by

All of humanity must think of the parable of the rich man and the beggar. Humanity must translate it into contemporary terms, in terms of economy and politics, in terms of human rights, in terms of relations between the “first,” “second,” and “third world.” We cannot stand idly by when thousands of human beings are dying of hunger.
Pope John Paul II
Ending hunger is not an option for people of faith. Standing idly by while 25,000 of our sisters and brothers die of hunger every day is as morally repugnant and indefensible as if we helped murder them ourselves.
We know the difference between right and wrong. But, knowing is not enough. We must act on what is right. Nowhere is that more clear than in our need to make a difference on behalf of the poor and hungry.
