The United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR) has just announced that there are over 65,000,000 refugees that have fled their homeland. That’s the highest number in history. Over 12,000,000 of these refugees are from one country, Syria.
At issue is not only their future, but the future of the world. How this part of our human family is received, how they are treated, and how they are accepted will determine not only what will ultimately happen to them, but exactly who we are and the values we truly espouse.
I have watched families fleeing their burning homes while dodging sniper fire. I have had the privilege to visit dozens of refugee camps and camps for the internally displaced, and have seen firsthand the fear, the anguish and the heartbreak of those driven from their homes.
In the end, it boils down to opening our arms to others in need, even as we would hope arms would be opened to our families if in the same tragic circumstances. We cannot go too far wrong just hewing as closely as possible to the Golden Rule.
Wouldn’t our world be a far better place for all our family if we could be consistently working toward such a simple goal? The ripples of grace and justice each of us could create would have an impact far beyond our imagination.
Earlier this morning I read that Robert Mueller’s team has added over a dozen new attorneys to help dig deeper into the malfeasance and corruption at the heart of Trump’s circle. Now, the president’s personal lawyer, following the wise move of Vice President Pence, has hired another lawyer to represent him. When lawyers hire lawyers they know it is about to get real.
Trump is single-handedly attempting to kick-start the economy by providing more jobs for lawyers. I don’t care how many flying monkeys the #Blotus lets fly, the Hounds of Justice are coming after him, and he can feel them getting ever closer.
I am only 70 years old, but I have to say that never, let me repeat that, NEVER have I seen any politician whine as much as the #BLOTUS. He is a spoiled, petulant brat that has never grown up.
He lies about the lies he lied to cover up the lies he lied about the lies. Then he whines about fake news and witch hunts.
All his ill-gotten wealth cannot buy enough lawyers to keep him out of the sights of all the investigators on his slimy trail. He is close to being treed by the hounds of justice.
I m currently editing a children’s book on ways to help the hungry. When I saw this, I again realized that helping others, serving others, living for others are all at the core of changing the world and achieving true justice. That’s true for all of us, and not just children.
