helping evil win

“THROUGHOUT HISTORY, IT HAS BEEN THE INACTION OF THOSE WHO COULD HAVE ACTED, THE INDIFFERENCE OF THOSE WHO SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER, THE SILENCE OF THE VOICE OF JUSTICE WHEN IT MATTERED MOST, THAT HAS MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR EVIL TO TRIUMPH.”                                                                                                   – Haile Selassie

All of us have the awesome responsibility to exercise our rights as citizens. I have long heard that we have the government we deserve. And I have now come to see exactly what that means.

We all need to step up and make our voices heard. We need to stand up and make sure our vote is counted. We cannot allow the plague of fear, hatred, and ultra-right nationalism to continue to spread. It’s up to us to stop the spread of this insidious infection.

And if we don’t, if we are too busy, too indifferent, too callous and uncaring, well… we will live in a country that has the government we deserve.

God will not hold us Guiltless

Faithfulness to the Gospel demands nothing less. God will not hold us guiltless for silence in the face of evil.

Bonhoeffer was a German theologian martyred for his opposition to Hitler. His words remind us that authentic spirituality requires a real and costly  discipleship.

passive acceptance is cooperation

It is not enough to silently disagree with the corruption and evil of the current president and his administration. That silence gives tacit approval to the overt racism being spewed. That silence is seen by the predator-in-chief as acquiescence to concentration camps and draconian immigration policies.

We cannot allow our silence to be seen as support. We cannot allow our silence to encourage this cancerous evil in the white house.

Stand up. Speak out. Take action. Resist the evil that you see. In the end it is a spiritual matter.

welcome the stranger…

WWJD? Yes, what would Jesus do? I think we all know. He would welcome the stranger, lift up the fallen, feed the hungry, and demonstrate compassion and love to all those seeking refuge and help.

Isn’t that exactly what we who call ourselves his disciples are supposed to be doing? Isn’t following the example of Jesus Christ exactly what should be reasonably expected of us?

she’s from another country…

There are far too many who no longer believe in the promises of Lady Liberty. They would be pleased to banish her and her values of caring, compassion and love for the downtrodden, poor and hungry.

I, for one, love her and her promises. I deplore our xenophobic racism. our selfishness, and our apathetic response to the growing hatred, fear, anger and ugliness of our culture.

I may be in the minority, but I want to help hold her torch higher and make it shine brighter. Working together I think we can make it happen. What do you want?
