We have a pathological, lying pig in the White House who is unable to even spell truth, much less, practice it. His open attacks on our democratic principles and values never cease, and his greed and hubris knows absolutely no limits.
The danger is not that a majority believes or supports this racist whore monger. The danger is the constant barrage of lies, the unrelenting attacks on the norms of decency, and the never-ending pressing of the legal limits of our society.
Over time we can become worn down and actually begin to accept all of this as “normal.” We do so, however, at our peril. This must never be allowed to happen. We have to remember that a lie is always a lie.
“A lie doesn’t become truth, wrong doesn’t become right, and evil doesn’t become good just because it is accepted by the majority.”
I have never had the pleasure of meeting Jim Sathe. But, after reading his letter-to-the-editor, I would love to shake his hand and compliment him on presenting his thoughts so succinctly. I am sure we could be great friends.
This quote from George Orwell’s 1984 seems eerily relevant today, doesn’t it? It has become ever more clear that power is the one thing, the only thing, that matters to the #BLOTUS and the Republicans in Congress.
If you need an example, which most thinking folks don’t at this point, just look at the complete Republican support of Roy Moore to fill the Senate seat vacated by Jeff Sessions. Having another Republican vote in the Senate outweighs any question of improper or immoral behavior.
The many-times accused molester in the Offal Office has said that having a Republican like the accused child molester, Roy Moore, in the Senate is far preferable to having a Democrat, any Democrat, fill the seat. Moore not only has been accused by numerous women of involvement with them as young and underage girls, the man has twice been removed from his seat as Judge.
None of that matters. All that matters, the only thing that matters, is power, pure power.
Written from a prison cell while awaiting his execution, this short treatise, “On Stupidity,” rings far too clearly despite the passing years. For those with ears to hear, we need to recognize that the political climate within our country is being manipulate by those that appeal to the basest emotions and fears of the least educated among us.
Yes, we are living in a dangerous time. Yes, decisions are being made daily that seem senseless on the surface and even evil when more closely examined. But arguing with most of those supporting the present agenda isn’t the answer.
As Bonhoeffer concludes, trying to persuade the stupid person with reason and fact is both “senseless and dangerous.”
“Ray Buchanan founded Rise Against Hunger (formerly Stop Hunger Now) and retired in 2015. Comments made on this site are the sole expression of the author, are not made on behalf of the organization, and do not necessarily reflect the views of the organization.”
A lie shouted by thousands and believed by millions is still a lie. And evil, even when sanctified by law, is still evil. We need to remember this and we need to work together to ensure that truth is honored and good is upheld.
