A Prayer of St. Augustine

Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy. Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy. Amen.

a prayer for peacemakers

I praise you this morning, God. You alone are worthy of worship and praise, and so I pause to again give you glory and honor for your love, your mercy and your unending grace.

Thank you for your unconditional love and acceptance. Thank you for the grace of Jesus the Christ and for the explosive power of the Holy Spirit. Thank you for creating such a perfect world.

This morning I lift up all the victims of senseless violence. Be with the families of those recently killed in Paris, but be with those grieving families in other areas of the world, as well. families in Syria, in Yemen, in Uganda, in South Sudan, in Iraq , Afghanistan, and even here in the United States. Let every member of every family touched by violence feel your love and experience your peace that passes all understanding.

And Lord I would pray that you grant all your children that perfect love that casts out fear. Help us live as your children should live, unafraid of whatever life brings. We now live in an age of growing violence and terrorism. Grant us all the strength and blessing of faith and faithfulness that we might be beacons of hope and light in a world darkened by fear and hatred.

Allow each of us to live alive, fully sharing the love you have first given us. Help us to be agents of reconciliation in every relationship you have granted us. Empower us to speak love and peace in the face of fear, bigotry and hatred.  Grant us the strength to be peacemakers in a world gone mad. And in the end, grant us the blessing of your eternal presence. Amen

a prayer for the rich

God of mercy and justice, we praise you this perfect day for all the gifts you have given your children. We glorify your name for your sustaining grace and the everlasting love poured so freely into our lives. You have given us so much, and for everything we have and all that we are, we give you our thanks.

Our prayer this morning is for the grace to more fully respond to the love and grace you have first given us. Help us always remember, and always be aware that all we have comes from you.

We have been so richly blessed with material abundance. We have financial wealth unimaginable by most of our human family. We take solid shelter and good homes for granted in a world teeming with refugees and the homeless. Food security is never an issue for our families Instead, we complain about variety and search out ever newer and exotic meals. We spend without thought, and eat to excess in a world full of poor and hungry.

Forgive us, Lord, for our thoughtlessness. Forgive us for our lack of awareness. Forgive us for our continued misuse of the gifts so freely bestowed upon us. Forgive us for our lack of caring… and our lack of sharing.

Lord, open our eyes so that we might see our world through your eyes. Grant us compassion deep enough to bring us to our knees in true empathy with those of our family chained by poverty and hunger. Grant us the miracle-working power of your Holy Spirit to lift us above our self-centeredness, our selfishness and fears so that we might love the least of these among us enough to open ourselves fully enough to share not only all we have…but all we are. Lord, teach us this morning how to be generous, and to give as you have first given to us.

Grant us more generous hearts. Help us more fully reflect your love through our caring and our sharing. And let all we have been given be used to glorify you. Amen

a prayer for those that hunger

Most gracious and merciful God, I praise You and offer You thanks and worship at the start of this beautiful day. I pray for Your grace and forgiveness this morning. I pray that the power of your Holy Spirit may fill me to overflowing that all my speech and all my actions might be a powerful witness to Your eternal and unchanging love.

I especially lift up to You this morning all those suffering from hunger and malnutrition. Bless them in a special way. Grant them food, but also grant them justice.Work through me to help achieve a world where justice leads to peace, and where hunger is nothing but a memory.

Lord, help us to be obedient to Your Word. Grant me the grace to be obedient to Your perfect will. Use us, use me, to end hunger in my lifetime. And may the entire human family know the love You have brought. Amen

a prayer for peace in South Sudan

Most merciful and loving God, how precious is your Name. This morning I pray for all those in distress from war and violence in every land. I especially lift up the people of South Sudan where peace is so desperately needed.

Let your grace abound and let the power of of your Holy Spirit minister comfort to all those most in need. Fill your people with the hunger to minister to the needs of the poor and hungry providing food for both body and soul.

And for all of us, we pray that your perfect will be done. Guide us and direct us in thought word and deed so that we continue to move our world toward a place of peace and justice. AMEN

a prayer for the power to serve

Gracious and most merciful Creator, You have graced us beyond comprehension. All that we have, even life itself, is a gift from you. And for all that we have received we give you thanks and praise.

Even as we praise you for the mercy and love you have poured into our lives we recognize that there are those around us that are not so blessed. We are forced to admit that our world is not just, that evil abounds, that violence stalks the poor, and that hunger still kills thousands of our family every day.

Our prayer this morning is that each of us who call ourselves followers of your Son might be guided more completely by his love and compassion. Allow us to be touched by the pain and fear of the poor and hungry. Allow us to sense the anger Jesus felt for those who would abuse the weak.

And throughout this week we would ask that you would guide us to those we might demonstrate compassion and mercy in your name. Fill us with the power of your Holy Spirit that we might bring bring peace where there is conflict and grace where the need is the greatest. Grant us the power to serve you by serving those most in need of your love.

a prayer for faithfulness

Most gracious and loving God, I come to you this morning to give you praise and offer you my heartfelt thanks. I worship you and open myself to you again.

Grant me your wisdom today. Allow me to see those around me through the eyes of Jesus and to respond with both grace and compassion. Help me be a voice of peace and reconciliation amid the cacophony of mistrust, hatred and fear.

And most gracious Creator, guide me throughout this day and this week that I may always be in the center of your perfect will for my life. Help my heart to stay attuned to the still small voice of your Spirit, and give me the courage to not only listen but to obey.

Through the power of the Holy Spirit grant me the power to be a good and faithful follower throughout this week. Let me prove my discipleship by my every word and action. Help me to be faithful in all things, both great and small.

I give you all praise, worship and honor. Glory be to your Name, both now and forever. Amen

recognizing the voice of Jesus

Father, This morning, the cries of the hungry are overwhelming. This morning, the cries of the politically and economically exploited are overwhelming. This morning, the cries of those in prison and under torture are overwhelming. This morning, the cries of parents who know that their children are doomed to stunted and warped lives are overwhelming.

Help us, most merciful God, to hear the voice of Your Son in all of these cries. Help us to recognize the cries we hear as calls to faithfulness and deeper discipleship. Grant us the wisdom to respond to all these cries with grace and compassion, and grant us the power of the Holy Spirit to respond to these cries with both justice and mercy. Amen
