Our country, and the values it has always represented to the rest of the world, is being systematically destroyed from within. The current administration is the most corrupt in our nation’s history, and is led by an self-acknowledged sexual predator who is far friendlier with Vladimir Putin than our own military and intelligence services.
We stand by silently at our own peril. We are watching as our nation is being ripped apart without acting. The time to speak out is now.
Human kindness has never weakened the stamina or softened the fiber of a free people. A nation does not have to be cruel to be tough.
WWJD? Yes, what would Jesus do? I think we all know. He would welcome the stranger, lift up the fallen, feed the hungry, and demonstrate compassion and love to all those seeking refuge and help.
Isn’t that exactly what we who call ourselves his disciples are supposed to be doing? Isn’t following the example of Jesus Christ exactly what should be reasonably expected of us?
You don’t have to wear robes to be complicit in Trump’s racism and xenophobia. You don’t have to chant or resort to the violence he routinely incites. You don’t have to parrot all his pathological lies.
All that is necessary to demonstrate your support is to quietly smile and say nothing…exactly like the Republicans in Congress do every single day.
I do not claim to be a Biblical scholar, but I am fairly certain that Jesus didn’t invite the lost, the broken, the weary, and the stranger into concentration camps to help keep the nation of Israel racially pure.
And when He said, “let the little children come unto me…” I know it was not to rip them from their parents and throw them into cages.
The Predator-in-Chief, the Attorney General, and the majority of Republicans disagree. But, their understanding of faithfulness and discipleship is far different than mine.
I am not sure what their religious beliefs are, or who they claim as their spiritual guide. What I am sure of is they have nothing in common with with the Christ of the Gospels.
The closest I can see them coming to Christ is found in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 25. It is in verses 31 when He tells them, “Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has be prepared for the devil and his angels.”
I do not give a damn what laws are on the books. Anyone not condemning such treatment of those seeking protection and asylum in our country is complicit with such blatant hatred and racism.
Trump’s greatness is the greatness of Nazi Germany, Stalin’s Russia, or any other dictator you care to name. There’s a vast difference between greatness and evil. And perpetrating evil never leads to greatness…never.
