Something t.he Church should be doing… basic morality calls for each of us to stand up on behalf of the poor, hungry, outcast, marginalized and mistreated. The protesting NFL players are using their highly visible platform to demonstrate to all the rest of us that we have no excuse not to get involved in ending injustice.
How is it that we do not have the financial resources to provide relief for the most vulnerable among us, but we always have the means to subsidize our largest and most profitable corporations? The answer is not that difficult. In fact, it is fairly straightforward.
It’s about wealth and greed. It’s about what we value, and it’s about our political leaders feathering their own nests. It’s about not caring enough to get involved.
And when we continue to elect leaders who vote for allowing millions of our citizens to be stalked by hunger, we need to be honest with ourselves. We are complicit.
Ostrichitis is the common disease of sticking one’s head in the sand to avoid seeing or dealing with unpleasant, ugly, or dangerous situations. It can be fatal if not treated. Hiding from the reality of the present political situation is one of the first symptoms.
Sometimes outrage is just a sign of getting our heads out of the sand. Never in my lifetime has there been a greater need to become aware and to become involved.
