“For I was a stranger…”

I do not claim to be a Biblical scholar, but I am fairly certain that Jesus didn’t invite the lost, the broken, the weary, and the stranger into concentration camps to help keep the nation of Israel racially pure.

And when He said, “let the little children come unto me…” I know it was not to rip them from their parents and throw them into cages.

The Predator-in-Chief, the Attorney General, and the majority of Republicans disagree. But, their understanding of faithfulness and discipleship is far different than mine.

I am not sure what their religious beliefs are, or who they claim as their spiritual guide. What I am sure of is they have nothing in common with with the Christ of the Gospels.

The closest I can see them coming to Christ is found in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 25. It is in verses 31 when He tells them, “Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has be prepared for the devil and his angels.”

the begging Jesus

"Jesus Panhandling" cartoon by nakedpastor David Hayward

When the church has been stolen by the religious right it is no longer the place of love that Jesus created. If you feel stolen is too strong a word, I will settle for co-opted.

Many who Jesus died for, and loves the most, are being mocked, excluded, vilified, and intentionally made to feel unwanted and unwelcome. This has to break God’s heart.

When the least of these are not welcome, Jesus is being excluded as well. When we close our doors to them, we close our door to God.

The gulf between the poor (the marginalized, the hungry, the stranger, the immigrant, those who are different than us in any way) and us is actually the gulf between us and God. It’s time to help Jesus get His church back.  It’s supposed to be a place of love and acceptance, not a place of hate.

living on the edge

I believe the entire universe was created for our joy. Yet, most of us live lives of fear and insecurity, preferring the cramped confines of our little boxes to the freedom of the unknown.

Life in all its fullness will never be found in a box.  Only when we have the courage and the audacity to escape the rigid prisons of our own design will we finally experience the glorious freedom for which we were created.

The path to true joy follows the edge. And that path can never be found while in the false comfort of a box, even one made of gold. Jump out of your boxes and into a creation waiting to grant you “joy unspeakable and full of glory.” You won’t regret it.

the great divide

What a wonderful illustration of the great divide. This delightful cartoon tells the story of one of my favorite quotes.

“The distance between us and the poor is the distance between us and God.”

A church that is happy and taking its ease during these times is a church that doesn’t comprehend the love of God, or the gospel of Jesus Christ. And any Christian leader that isn’t outraged at our government’s treatment of the poor and marginalized needs to wake up and pay attention.

a lie is a lie

Euphemistically speaking, I don’t care what you care to call them. The bald-faced lies of #BLOTUS are lies. The only relation they have to facts are that the are usually diametrically opposed. And even when his lies snuggle up close to the truth they are made slimy with intent.

A lie is a lie. All the fact checkers cannot be wrong. I remain mystified by my nation’s inability to acknowledge that #BLOTUS is a pathological liar that cannot be trusted. He grabs the truth as he brags about grabbing women. And he respects them both only as much as he can use them for his pleasure.
