The grades are in, and we have received a nice fat F. And F means we have failed to learn that our kids are valuable and their education is of paramount importance.
Will we ever learn? When will we begin to put a higher priority on education than we do on profit?
The piece reprinted below was in my email hunger feed this morning. I reprint it here because I applaud any effort to help end the unnecessary evil of hunger in a world of plenty.

Where Did This Idea Come From?
It began as a passion project between a couple of friends and has since turned into the collaborated effort of a large number of young entrepreneurs and activists from all corners of Canada and the United States.
The idea was to create a new, sustainable model that could inspire change and create real, lasting global impact. They believed the old ways just weren’t cutting it.
- There are a lot of non-profit organizations around the globe doing a lot of good; however, most rely on external donations and funding/grants in order to remain sustainable.
- There are also a lot of good for-profit companies that make quality products that people want. Some give back portions, but at the end of the day they are still driven to make profits for their shareholders.
Combine the two models. Find individuals who 1) share the same passion, and 2) don’t need profit as incentive.
Thus, imprint Hat Co. was born.
Seeing as they are still a new start-up without the large marketing budget that some of their competitors are afforded, they have taken a real grassroots approach, relying heavily on word-of-mouth awareness through social media and other channels.
Luckily they have caught the attention of a few big names already, including their new Global Ambassador and online viral video celeb, Prince Ea, to help get the word out.
At the end of the day, they believe tying social and environmental causes to business will be essential to creating the paradigm shift needed to make real, lasting change in the world. The team at imprint Hat Co intends to be the catalyst for this change, but they can’t do it alone.

Some believe it is only great power that can hold evil in check. But that is not what I have found.

I love fantasy, and Tolkien is one of my favorites. It’s passages like the one above that endear him to me. Fantasy as a genre has a greater power to convey truth than many realize. As Ursula LeGuin (another one of my favorites) so rightly points out, “Dragons aren’t real, but they’re true.” And the wise old Wizard, Gandalf, not only nails the truth in the passage above, he hammers it home with subtle power.
How do we defeat the evil so rampant in our world? How do we make a real difference in the lives of the millions forced to suffer from need and hunger? How do we change the world forever?
We heal our world through small everyday deeds of kindness and love. We choose to live in a way that is fair and just for all. We consciously adopt a lifestyle the empowers the powerless and gives voice to the voiceless. We intentionally stand and walk along side the poor and hungry rather than mindlessly buying into systems that have only greed and profit as their core values.
We keep the darkness at bay by joining together with other folks just like ourselves and practicing justice through the way we live. And ultimately, our small everyday acts of love and kindness will achieve a world where the light of justice will not only keep the dragons at bay, but defeat forever the darkness that spawns them.
It’s always a mystery to me how our consumeristic society can so quickly and easily turn something so beautiful into something so profitable. Valentine’s Day is a case in point.
In three days we will celebrate Valentine’s Day. And all of us know what that means. For anyone with a spouse, partner, or significant other, the day “mandates:”
A. an expensive (and for full credit) sentimental card
B. a box of fancy chocolates
C. at least a dozen red roses
D. a nice dinner (preferably at a restaurant of note)
E. jewelry or (in extreme cases)
F. all of the above
Cash registers across the country are singing their happy song! How much can we be guilted into spending to insure that special someone really knows how much we care?
What never ceases to amaze me, however, is how completely we have bought into this mindless “spend to prove you love me” orgy. Love is not about roses, or even chocolates, no matter how decadently delicious they might be. While giving thoughtful gifts to those we love is never out of season, poor Saint Valentine is surely rolling over in his grave at the way we profane his day.
I’ll talk more about the saint in my next post, but for now I just want to close with a poem from one of the most influential female saints in Islam. Her name is Rabia of Basra, and she lived around 717-801. She is another of my favorite poets. The poem is entitled THE PERFECT STILLNESS.
