#BLOTUS and his Flying Monkeys

Earlier this morning I read that Robert Mueller’s team has added over a dozen new attorneys to help dig deeper into the malfeasance and corruption at the heart of Trump’s circle. Now, the president’s personal lawyer, following the wise move of Vice President Pence, has hired another lawyer to represent him. When lawyers hire lawyers they know it is about to get real.

Trump is single-handedly attempting to kick-start the economy by providing more jobs for lawyers. I don’t care how many flying monkeys the #Blotus lets fly, the Hounds of Justice are coming after him, and he can feel them getting ever closer.

let’s not pretend…

Oops too late (Post-Election Poll Jump For trump - 54% of Americans think trump will succeed as president, and trump gets all-time high likability rating of 47%, up about ten points from pre-election . What's the matter with America????):

A follow-up to yesterday’s post, this powerfully direct statement by Eugene Robinson is a plea for all of us to stand up to the intentional destruction of common decency that the election of the #BLOTUS represents. The open misogyny, ugliness, and vindictive behavior of those in power should  never be normalized.

No person, especially the President of the United States, deserves respect when basic human decency seems to be a foreign concept to them. Leadership requires far more than wealth and power.

When children act inappropriately we are quick to teach them how to behave properly. Isn’t it time we do the same with the leader of the free world?

Non Christians Grasp Moral Values better than Christians

These poll results, from October 2016 are disturbing as they are frightening. They do, however, explain a great deal.

Those voters claiming no religion clearly understand the lack of moral values on display by #BLOTUS. What is so alarming about this is that White Christians all feel much more strongly that this man has a strong moral character.

When non Christians can see the lack of moral character in #BLOTUS while Christians cannot, it is a strong indictment on our lack of teaching in the Church. Somehow we have not been taught  true Gospel values. Either that, or the Church has completely sold out to society.

Actually, both are probably true. We have allowed ourselves to be blinded to the ugly reality of society so flagrantly demonstrated by #BLOTUS. The racism, the hatred, the bullying, the bigotry, the nepotism, the greed, the lying are no longer seen as moral character flaws, but are even admired.

There’s a vast chasm between faithfulness to the Gospel and blind patriotism. It saddens me that the majority of those attending Church this morning cannot see that. Their unwavering support of a liar who consistently lives so contrary to the values taught by Jesus proves they are blind to reality.

how to spot a dictator

Not everyone likes the truth. And not everyone will admit that documented facts are real. And there are some among us who refuse to acknowledge reality, even as they are stepping in a big pile of it.

Having traveled to, and having worked in over 100 countries, many of them dictatorships, I know what dictators look like. I know how dictators act. I know how they speak. That is why I fear this new US administration.

This is not about Democrat vs. Republican or red vs. blue.  This is about the future of our country. I am not calling #BLOTUS a dictator. But, I am begging everyone to open their eyes and look at reality.

If it looks like a duck, if it walks like a duck, if it quacks like a duck, there’s a better than average chance it’s not a kitten.

Farewell, Mr. President!

For eight years we have been blessed with a scandal-free First Family. I, for one, will miss President Obama’s quiet dignity and deep strength in the face of all the hatred and opposition he faced from the moment he took the oath of office.

History will bear record to his accomplishments. He has exemplified true servant leadership and has led our nation with intelligence, wit, humor and true humility.

We now enter a new era where the new leader of our nation thrives on lies and scandals, cannot communicate a clear thought and reeks of racism, xenophobia and bigotry. I, along with most of the world, am holding my breath as the United States begins a perilous journey led by an ego larger than the nation, itself.

Farewell, President Obama, and God bless you. You are already missed.

lapdogs get the treats

That the BLOTUS has not attacked the church is truly an indictment on the lack of faithfulness we have demonstrated. Anyone, and everyone, who has confronted him over his racism, his bullying, his lying, his treatment of women, or any other serious issue, has been mocked, vilified, or verbally attacked.

BLOTUS goes after his critics. Lapdogs, however, just get fed treats.

corrupting influence

“[T]here remains [in some parts of the country] a strong bias towards the old error, that without some sort of alliance or coalition between Govt. & Religion neither can be duly supported. Such indeed is the tendency to such a coalition, and such its corrupting influence on both parties, that the danger cannot be too carefully guarded against.”
― James Madison, James Madison: Writings

Madison’s words are as true today as when he originally penned them almost two centuries ago. Our nation’s founders separated government and religion to guard against this “corrupting influence on both parties.”

Today we are living with the results of not defending against this old error. Madison warned us to ever guard more closely against this unholy alliance.  We should have heeded his words.

Over 80% of white evangelical Christians voted for Donald Trump to be our country’s next president. They knowingly agreed with, and endorsed Trump’s clearly stated anti-Christian values.

This is a clear and present danger. The majority of those voting in this election claiming to follow Jesus Christ cast their vote for a lying, racist, fear-mongering, bigot.  They supported a xenophobic, bullying, braggart who is the antithesis of the love of Jesus Christ reflected in the gospels.

How and why this happened should ring alarms for leaders throughout the faith community. When this large a percentage of “believers” abandon the teachings of Jesus to vote for hate and fear, it is a statement that something is drastically and critically awry.

Personally, I see this as a failure of leadership, itself. There has been a significant lack of courage to address the deep divisive issues of our society from the pulpit. Christian leaders have not led by example, and have played it safe and “made nice” rather than confront un-Christian values in our congregations.

And so now, one cannot tell the believers from the nonbelievers without a program. We have met the enemy and they are us.

new national values

President Carter nailed it with this comment. And as the recent Presidential election has so clearly demonstrated, most of us do not care about Christian values. We voted our fear instead of our faith. We put our faith in change rather than in love.

The man we have chosen for president does not reflect the values of Jesus Christ. I do not care about parties, tags, or even promises. But, I do care about a visible, historical record of lying, greed, fraud, hatred, vengeance, bullying, racism and a serious lack of self control.

I (and the entire world) have witnessed all of those in our president-elect. It’s the way he lives. It’s his lifestyle. What I haven’t seen is love, caring, compassion, joy and a desire for justice.  We have elected a leader that reflects the opposite of Christian values.

Electing Donald Trump as our next president is a clear statement of our new national values. And they are anything but Christian.
