act as if your house is on fire…

This is the face of a leader. This is someone willing to stand up and demand accountability from those in power. This is how the world is changed for the better. We all need to act as if our house is on fire. The world depends on it.

eternal obligation

Simone Weil was a French social philosopher, mystic and and social activist. She was also a part of the French Resistance during World War II before she died in 1943. She wrote that:

“It is an eternal obligation toward the human being not to let him suffer from hunger
when one has a chance of coming to his assistance.”

I am sure not everyone believes in eternal obligations, yet there are few of us who would disagree with the validity of the point Simone Weil is making.  As members of the human family don’t we have a basis moral responsibility to ease the suffering of one another?

As a Christian I believe that I am called to love those around me as I love myself. I am actually called to love those around me even more than I love myself. I am instructed to love those around me as Christ loves. That’s a tall order, but one thing about that call is gin clear. Such love definitely requires me to come to the assistance of those around me suffering from hunger.

For me, that’s an eternal obligation. Feeding the hungry is a faith response. To do less would be unthinkable.

Your motivation might be different. Yet, I would hope that we could all come to the place where we understand that we do have an unmistakable responsibility for one another. We are all called to help end hunger.

We are all part of one glorious human family. And where I come from family takes care of each other. I guess that might be called an eternal obligation, as well.
