a Veterans Day Prayer

God of peace, we pray for those who have served our nation
and have laid down their lives to protect and defend our freedom.

We pray for those who have fought, whose spirits and bodies are scarred by war,
whose nights are haunted by memories too painful for the light of day.

We pray for those who serve us now, especially for those in harm’s way.
Shield them from danger and bring them home.

Turn the hearts and minds of our leaders and our enemies
to the work of justice and a harvest of peace.
Spare the poor, Lord, spare the poor!

May the peace you left us, the peace you gave us,
be the peace that sustains, the peace that saves us.

Christ Jesus, hear us! Lord Jesus, hear our prayer!

Amen.

nonviolence is a lifestyle

Martin Luther King, Jr.:

Jesus said that if we hate a person we have already committed murder in our hearts. There are far too many of us who need to ask for forgiveness for carrying murder in our hearts.

As Christians we are asked to love without limits, and to be bearers of grace and reconciliation in every situation. We need nonviolent spirits. We need the peace of Christ in our hearts.

intolerance and violence

If we are ever to achieve true global community we must all stand up and make our voices heard. Silence in the face of intolerance is not acceptable. It is complicity.

Intolerance comes from fear and insecurity. Love is about openness and acceptance. I choose love. I choose openness. I choose acceptance.

What about you?

a concise lesson in healing

Here’s a powerful and timely message for all of us. There’s precious few of us who do not stand in need of healing. And here is a perfect prescription.

As this little nugget so succinctly points out, we need to play more, to laugh more, and fill our life with more joy. And unlike most prescriptions, this one is absolutely free.

prayer for a time of hunger

Prayer for a Time of Hunger ~ from Bread for the World,
www.bread.org, 2009

God our sustainer, we ask you to pour your powerful Spirit into
all who are empty this day: Fill the hearts of persons who are
troubled. Fill the minds of men and women who are confused.
Fill the stomachs of your children who are hungry. Fill the souls
of people who are feeling lost. Fill the lives of all who need you,
but do not know you. May your Spirit fill us all to overflowing,
dear Lord, and may we be inspired to share our abundance with
others, so that there will be no more empty hearts and minds,
stomachs and souls. We pray all this in the name of Jesus
Christ, who fills lives with your endless grace. Amen.

a prayer for world peace

A Prayer for World Peace

by Jane Goodall

We pray to the great Spiritual Power in which
we live and move and have our being.
We pray that we may at all times
keep our minds open to new ideas and shun dogma;
that we may grow in our understanding of the nature of all living beings
and our connectedness with the natural world;
that we may become ever more filled with
generosity of spirit and true compassion and love for all life;
that we may strive to heal the hurts that we have inflicted on nature
and control our greed for material things, knowing that
our actions are harming our natural world and the future of our children;
that we may value each and every human being
for who he is, for who she is,
reaching to the spirit that is within,
knowing the power of each individual to change the world.We pray for social justice,
for the alleviation of the crippling poverty
that condemns millions of people around the world
to lives of misery – hungry, sick, and utterly without hope.
We pray for the children who are starving,
who are condemned to homelessness, slave labor, and prostitution,
and especially for those forced to fight, to kill and torture
even members of their own family.
We pray for the victims of violence and war,
for those wounded in body and for those wounded in mind.
We pray for the multitudes of refugees, forced from their homes to alien places
through war or through the utter destruction of their environment.We pray for suffering animals everywhere,
for an end to the pain caused by scientific experimentation,
intensive farming, fur farming, shooting, trapping,
training for entertainment, abusive pet owners,
and all other forms of exploitation
such as overloading and overworking pack animals,
bull fighting, badger baiting, dog and cock fighting and so many more.We pray for an end to cruelty,
whether to humans or other animals,
for an end to bullying, and torture in all its forms.
We pray that we may learn the peace that comes with forgiving
and the strength we gain in loving;
that we may learn to take nothing for granted in this life;
that we may learn to see and understand with our hearts;
that we may learn to rejoice in our being.We pray for these things with humility;
We pray because of the hope that is within us,
and because of a faith in the ultimate triumph of the human spirit;
We pray because of our love for Creation, and because of our trust in God.
We pray, above all, for peace throughout the world.

a prayer for a world without poverty

I Dare to Pray For A World without Poverty

I dare to pray: Lord, let the world be changed,
For I long to see the end of poverty;
I dare to pray: Lord, let the rules be changed,
For I long to see our economic structures bring justice to the poor;
I dare to pray: Lord, let my life be changed,
For I long to bring hope where the Good News is needed.

In the strength of your spirit
And inspired by your compassion,
I make this promise to work for change,
And wait confidently for the day
When you make all things new
And those that weep will rejoice.
