I’ve spent the majority of my life working to end hunger. I know from personal experience that by working together we can change the world. It starts with speaking up for those who cannot be heard and standing up for those who cannot be seen.
Faulkner says it far better than I can. Read his quote again. But, achieving a world of peace and justice, a world where honesty, truth and compassion holds sway, is possible. We can achieve a world where caring trumps greed, lying, and hatred.
I want that world. Let’s stand up and speak out, and let us not be afraid to continue speaking out until we transform our world into a place where love truly trumps fear and hatred.
A lie shouted by thousands and believed by millions is still a lie. And evil, even when sanctified by law, is still evil. We need to remember this and we need to work together to ensure that truth is honored and good is upheld.
“My fellow Americans, it has been the honor of my life to serve you. I won’t stop; in fact, I will be right there with you, as a citizen, for all my remaining days. But for now, whether you are young or whether you’re young at heart, I do have one final ask of you as your president — the same thing I asked when you took a chance on me eight years ago.
I am asking you to believe. Not in my ability to bring about change — but in yours.”
– President Barack Obama
The closing words from President Obama’s Farewell Address are as powerful as they are poignant. A true servant leader, he understands the power of belief and the results that come from working together.
His wisdom, his grace and his smile will be sorely missed once he leaves office.
Today is my 70th birthday. I realize that at my age I neither have the time nor the inclination to remain calm while I look about me and see our beautiful world being systematically destroyed and my nation going to hell in a hack. It’s time to join together with like-minded people and change the world.
These are definitely words to remember as we go through the next four years. We have to work together to encourage each other and to demonstrate to the rest of the world that not everyone in our country has given up on love, mercy and caring for one another.
As I focus more on the year ahead, my heart tells me that the struggle is going to be long and hard. That doesn’t bother me. What concerns me most is that we may be too divided to work together for what is best for all of us.
The real debate, as DiCaprio stated back in 2014, is not about partisan politics. The real focus has to be about coming together to address and confront those issues affecting all of our global family. This is a moral obligation that I am not sure we are capable of meeting.
All of us are part of one human family. And we are all bound to our four-legged and winged family as well. In fact all living beings are connected on this beautiful planet we call home.
This coming year is a new opportunity to be aware of how all life is connected. It’s a new chance to live in gratitude and deep appreciation for the gifts we have been given. This new year is a time for us to save ourselves by saving each other as we all work together to save our planet.
